The 8 biggest movies to look forward to in 2012

2012_moviesMovie fans can look forward to eight big films this coming 2012.  Vampires and werewolves will make a big entrance at the beginning of the year, followed by a blazing demonic motorcycle rider. The gods and the Titans will battle for supremacy while the biggest team-up of Marvel superheroes will astound movie goers. Two familiar agents in black suits and shades will make a comeback and a DC comic hero will rise again. An impetuous girl with long tangled hair will entertain the kids and young-at-hearts. And, the teenage version of another superhero will learn to deal with his spider-like abilities.

Here are the eight biggest films set to hit the theaters in 2012:

 

1. Underworld: Awakening

Underworld is a film series about the war between Vampires, werewolves and Lycans (werewolves who evolved and learned how to shift from werewolves to humans).  The first film Underworld came out in 2003, starring Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a lovely vampire warrior who was raised to hate the werewolf race. Despite her strong allegiance to her own kind, Selene finds herself in love with Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), a Lycan who seeks to end the war between the two species. Underworld: Evolution was released in 2006, showing how humans discover the existence of the vampires and Lycans, and igniting a war to destroy both species.  Underworld: Rise of the Lycans came out in 2009, focusing on the history of the centuries-old war between the Vampires and the Lycans.

The Underworld saga continues with its fourth film Underworld Awakening (also referred to as Underworld 4). Beckinsale’s character wakes up from a coma and finds out that she has a half Vampire and half Lycan daughter (India Eisley) while the humans are out to eradicate the two immortal species.

Underworld: Awakening is directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. It is set to hit the theaters on January 20, 2012 in 3D.

2. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Nicolas Cage is back as the Ghost Rider in the new the sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

The original movie was released back in 2007. Marvel comics Johnny Blaze is a stunt motorcyclist who gives up his soul to save his father’s life, and becomes a fire blazing vigilante to fight Blackheart, the son of the devil.

Although Spirit of Vengeance is not a direct sequel to the first film, it shows Blaze emerging from a self-imposed exile to protect a mother and child being pursued by the devil.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, is bound for the big screen in 3D on February 17, 2012.

3. Wrath of the Titans

Sam Worthington is returning to the big screen next year as Perseus, the demigod son of Zeus. Ten years have passed since Perseus defeated the monstrous Kraken in 2010's Clash of the Titans.  He attempts to live a more peaceful life as a village fisherman and single parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. But in the immortal world, the gods are becoming weak due to the decline of devotion on the side of the humans.

Their weakening status is causing them to slowly lose control of their Titan prisoners, particularly the Titan leader, Kronos, father of the gods Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.  Perseus sets aside his peaceful life to help resume order in the world after Hades and Zeus’ son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez) switches sides and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus.

Wrath of the Titans, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, is going to hit the theaters on March 30, 2012.

4. The Avengers

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures are planning to release one of the biggest movies in 2012.

Movie goers are highly anticipating the super hero merge of a lifetime, featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemworth), The Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).  The Marvel superheroes team up when an unexpected enemy rises and threatens the safety of the world.

The Avengers, directed by Joss whedon, is anticipated to hit the movie theaters on May 4, 2012.

5. Men in Black III

The black suit tandem of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in the upcoming movie Men in Black III.  The first Men in Black film was released back in 1997, followed by Men in Black II in 2002.  Men in Black III will show Smith's Agent J jumping back in time to the 1960s, where an alien threatens the younger version of Jones' Agent K, putting to risk the future of the MIB organization and the existence of the human race.

Men in Black III, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, will be shown on May 25, 2012 in 3D.

6. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is the third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman film series. It follows Batman Begins which was released in 2005, and The Dark Knight in 2008.

The terrorist Bane (Tom Hardy) wreaks havoc in Gotham City, pushing the police and the whole city to their limits and forcing Batman (Christian Bale, once more donning the batsuit) to rise again. Aside from Bane, the character of Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) is also introduced in the movie.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

7. Brave

Kids and young-at-hearts can look forward to another Disney Pixar film.  Brave is an action adventure animated movie about an impulsive girl with tangled red hair named Merida (Kelly Macdonald).  As a daughter of royalty, Merida is expected to act prim and proper, but her heart is set on becoming a great archer. When Merida’s impetuous behavior leads to the unleashing of a dark, ancient curse, Merida sets off on an adventure to save her father’s kingdom and mother’s life.

Brave will be released on June 12, 2012.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man is the fourth film by Columbia Pictures based on the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-man.  Sony cancelled what would have been Spider-Man 4 and decided to reboot the franchise. The Amazing Spider-Man features a teenaged Peter Parker as he develops his superpowers in high school, while dealing with both human problems and super human crises.

The cast includes Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors.  It is directed by Marc Webb.

The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2012 in 3D and IMAX 3D.
