Summer’s over and recess is back in session. It’s back to school and one of the few things I’ve been asked about lately is choosing the right machine for your school kid.
In a nutshell, don’t worry about how “fast” the processor is, or how big the hard drive is. Buy a computer with as much Memory as you can. That’s RAM. Scrimp on anything else but please get a computer that has at least 2GB of memory. Buy protection: licensed copy of Windows, and antivirus and if buying for a desktop, get a UPS.
The reason for this is simple: so you get to wait a little less when typing or doing simple tasks like browsing the web. The few times your computer gets to use your Hard Disk as memory, it will be so much better. For using licensed software, you get the patches that while it won't be absolute protection will be one less thing to worry about in a windows world.
First, it needs to be able to browse the Web. Second, it needs to be able to do word processing, and maybe print. Third, it needs to be able to make a presentation. Fourth, but optional is being mobile.
So essentially, parents will be buying kinds a computer that needs to do simple things and our price range will be from budget to best buy.
