Introducing the Project formerly known as Natal is now Kinect.
According to 1up.com, at E3, the gaming conference, Microsoft has confirmed earlier rumors that the Microsoft Project formerly known as Natal will now be called Kinect.
The new XBox interface is controller free. Microsoft's new Kinect uses cameras to track your movements. There will be new generation of games that would take advantage of this such as Kinect Sports as reported by USA Today.
Microsoft's creative director for Natal, Kudo Tsunoda, opened things up by showing off Ricochet. It's a standard Breakout style game, only with Natal you'll have to leap around to swat balls back towards the targets. One time seeing this in person and you'll have to agree: the kids are going to go crazy for Natal. Ricochet is just so energetic -- it's exactly what a kid full of life would play until they collapsed for exhaustion.
Wii and Wii sports is now a dinosaur.
Michael Laprise, creative director was quoted, "The Project Natal experience is designed to generate emotional responses that echo the feelings Project Natal itself evokes. Experiencing a sense of connection and togetherness, members of the audience will be whisked away on a journey that is intense, engrossing, human-centered, interactive, imaginative and socially inclusive."
Some highlights from Microsoft's E3 keynote included:
- a young girl called out a pet and played with a tiger cub and there will be at least 140 animals to play with via Kinectanimals;
- Kinect Sports will have games like soccer, javelin, ping pong and boxing;
- Kinect Joy Ride will be a racing game;
- Forza 3 will get Kinect support;
- in 2011 there will be a Lightsaber gave from LucasArts;
- Call of Duty: Black OPS but will not be Kinect ready.
Kinect is the most innovative thing that Microsoft has created since Windows. This is revolutionary. This is the kind of innovation that gets Microsoft back on the map. This is going to be huge!
