Why you need to visit your local COMELEC office

Why you need to visit your local COMELEC office

It does not matter what kind of voter you are – new voter, old voter, disenfranchised voter, or a voter needing changes or corrections to voter details. Read on. This is for you.

The 2013 elections may seem like a very long way off but between then and now, if you have a few spare hours, hop on over to your local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office if you fall under any of several categories and register or validate your voter information.

COMELEC offices will be open from Mondays to Saturdays, 8am to 5pm. This should be more than ample time for everyone to get their voter registrations in order.

Continuing citizen-voters' education

Continuing citizen-voters' education

My decision not to vote for  Noynoy Aquino was based on my critieria of competency, character, coherent platform and clear vision. The night before May 10, I told myself that no matter who the president will be and as long as it is a fair and clean election (unlike the 2004 polls, with the Hello Garci s...

It started out as a dream. Tonyo Cruz of 100araw.com and I sat down with our laptops, sipping coffee in the cozy comfort of Bonifacio High Street musing over the future of Philippine elections. The namesake of this ritzy nook would have frowned upon the place but that afternoon, Andrés Bonifacio, the ...

Undecided on Manny Villar? (updated 5/5)

Survey results and trending

Survey results and trending

When I wrote Looking beyond survey results six months ago, the Social Weather Survey’s (SWS) third quarter in 2009 showed that the leading candidate, garnered 60 percent of the respondents' “votes.”

The question I asked that time was - does the trend towards this candidate spell doom for the other pr...

Beware of exit polls and trending before May 10, 2010

The first ever automated Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) in  Hong Kong and Singapore went smoothly. Comelec spokesman, James Jimenez reported that 218 people voted during the first day. Perhaps due to the excitement of the OAV, Noynoy Aquino (or the person behind his twitter account) suddenly announced:

We may as well remain undecided until the eleventh hour

Blogs and websites that fall within the little corner of the Net that I inhabit are abuzz with all sorts of political “analysis” and partisan posturing. You get the sense that everyone’s pretty much taken a “stand” in one form or another with regard to the coming elections. But then paying too much ...

The winnability factor

The winnability factor

I snoop around in beauty salons or even taxi cabs. Who are you voting? I get curious on their choices. At the salon of the Makati commercial center, my hairdresser whispered “ Villar is the most favored candidate here followed by Gibo.” That surprised me because Villar is not ranking in surveys of Met...

The party-list system: why we must care

Originally intended to promote comprehensive program-based politics instead of just personality-dependent platforms of governance, the party-list system has nevertheless managed to open itself up to abuses by self-serving groups and traditional politicians or “trapos.”
