Ever since Pinoy Big Brother launched its first episode in 2005, the “Teleserye ng totoong buhay” has been giving audiences pure entertainment and more career jumping points for new stars. PBB can be attributed for the humble beginnings of today’s biggest names such as Kim Chiu, Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson, Sam Pinto, Bianca Gonzales, Robi Domingo, James Reid, Tom Rodriguez, and many more. After ten years of laughs, tears, and lessons learned, here’s a look back at the most memorable winners and moments inside Kuya’s house.
Past winners: Where are they now?
1. Nene Tamayo
“Kumander Nene” was the very first winner of Pinoy Big Brother back in Season 1. With 48.9% of the votes, she tried her hand in showbiz and ended up establishing a food business of her own. She now has a son named Antonio with Anthony Plamio from Pangasinan.
- Keanna Reeves
Janet Duterte, also known as Keanna Reeves, got 44.2% of the votes when she won the first Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition. Her projects include Home Sweetie Home starring John Lloyd Cruz and Toni Gonzaga, as well as Toda Max and Biyaheng Bulilit. She also made the public buzz about her then 20-year-old boyfriend Kevin in 2013.
- Kim Chiu
How can anyone not know who this “Chinese Cutie ng Cebu” is? Now one of the biggest stars on ABS-CBN, Kim Chiu won the audience over with 41.4% of the votes. She started out with a pretzel endorsement due to her in-house acrobatic skills, and later on became part of the Kimerald love team with Gerald Anderson. The pair was an instant hit all over the nation (as proven by the box office movies and primetime teleseryes the two starred in). The Chinita Princess eventually moved on and is now with co-star Xian Lim.
- Beatriz Saw
Pinoy Big Brother Season 2 was Bea’s big moment, with 30.29% of the total votes. Her projects after PBB include the 2013 remake of Annaliza, My Cactus Heart, and One More Chance.
- Ruben Gonzaga
When the second season of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition came around, Ruben Gonzaga charmed the crowd with his Budotz Dance and won 32.17% of the votes. Married to Jeselle Gonzaga, Ruben is involved in the livelihood TV program Agri Tayo Dito.
- Ejay Falcon
Who would have thought that Ejay Falcon would be starring with Jake Cuenca, Coleen Garcia, Joseph Marco, Arci Muñoz, and rumored girlfriend Ellen Adarna? The remake of Pasion de Amor is only one of the many projects Ejay landed after winning the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus with 36.31% in 2008.
- Melai Cantiveros
Melai is most known for her sweet antics with fellow housemate Jason Francisco, and after they left the house, they became the infamous tandem “Melason”. The pair got married in 2013 and bore a child in 2014. Who says relationships inside the house can’t blossom out in the real world?
- James Reid
As the Big Winner of the 2010 Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash, James Reid became a showbiz hit with Diary ng Panget and Talk Back and You’re Dead. With Nadine Lustre, James is now part of the Jadine love team, and will star in Para sa Hopeless Romantic and On The Wings of Love.
- Slater Young
During Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited, Slater Young garnered 40.02% of the votes and won. The “Hotshot Engineer of Cebu” dabbled in showbiz with projects like Ina, Kapatid, Anak; Juan Dela Cruz, and the Cinemalaya entry #Y in 2014. He is currently focusing on being an entrepreneur.
10. Myrtle Sarrosa
She may be known to the cosplay world as a fantastic cosplayer, but in 2012, Myrtle won the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 4 with 33.92%. As a VJ for Hero TV, she was also included in the “FHM 100 Sexiest Women 2015” as well as in the “Star Magic Angels”.
11. Daniel Matsunaga
The latest Big Winner is model Daniel Matsunaga, earning 11.69% of the votes in Pinoy Big Brother All In. Fans are currently gushing over his sweet relationship with Two Wives co-star Erich Gonzalez.
Top moments in Kuya’s house
1. Rustom Padilla comes out of the closet.
The matinee idol had always been macho, especially coming from the infamous Padilla clan. But when Rustom joined the first Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition, he shocked the whole country when he revealed his deepest secret inside Kuya’s house. February 28, 2006 was the day that Rustom Padilla, formerly married to Carmina Villarroel, admitted that he was gay. “And I had no choice kasi na-realize ko, I am gay…Sinasabi ko sa ‘yo ngayon at sinasabi ko sa lahat ng tao, kasi hindi ako masamang tao,” he told Keanna Reeves. Rustom is now known as BB Gandanghari.
- Tom Rodriguez vents out on a wall.
The “Romantic Stud ng Samar” lost a game back in 2009’s Pinoy Big Brother Double Up, and to vent out his frustration, he unleashed his fury by punching a wall. For 22 hours, Tom was confined for hurting himself, and because of his violence inside the house, he was forcefully evicted. Thankfully, his career is still going strong especially when he broke through the small screen with My Husband’s Lover.
- Baron Geisler gets drunk.
Speaking of violence inside the house, Baron Geisler also got kicked out for inappropriate behavior. Following a “Boracay beach party”, Baron had too much to drink and was given a second chance despite him cursing Kuya. A second round of intoxication after a Christmas party had him verbally assaulting fellow housemates, and it finally got him evicted.
- Mariel Rodriguez rants about her former network.
During the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 2 in 2007, Mariel Rodriguez was caught speaking her mind about the television network where she once hosted Extra Challenge. Mariel told her fellow housemate Megan, “Alam mo, parang better ka na naman now kaysa noong mga days na ’yon. Kasi baduy sa GMA, aminin na natin. Come on it’s true, di ba?” Mariel even commented that there were too many “plastic” people in showbiz, and it certainly got the audiences talking.
Now on it’s 10th year, PBB 737 has also been controversial for a number of reasons. In PBB 737 Teen Edition, the show had to halt its 24/7 livestreaming on cable TV and on the internet when some netizens put malice on Bailey May and Kenzo Gutierrez’ friendship. The livestreaming was only restored during the regular season.
Another twist that generated buzz was this season’s “Big Yanig” where four housemates, Charlhone, Roger, Krizia and Mikee’s stay were compromised. The four, which made up the losing team during the food fest weekly task, were automatically nominated. Instead of the usual public vote, the four had to undergo an entrapment challenge, to which they eventually lost miserably. In the end, the safe housemates were given the power to save one of the nominees and Roger got to keep his slot.
In the same week, half-Pinoy, half-Japanese housemate Jyo decided to exit voluntary from the PBB house by flipping a coin. Replacing him was half-Pinoy, half-American Tommy, who has recently admitted having a crush on Miho. Two more new housemates, Zeus and Jameson, also entered the house, as well as returning housemate Mikee.
Currently, the regular housemates, teen housemates and past PBB winners are making an effort to raise 3 million pesos in order to build a community for less fortunate families in Bohol.
