Melissa Mendez in plane offloading incident
A Cebu Pacific Air flight headed for Mindanao was forced to return to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 20, 2015 (Friday) due to an unruly passenger. The concerned passenger was later identified as actress Melissa Mendez.
The actress had an altercation with a co-passenger named Rey Pamaran, a businessman who claimed that Mendez punched her.
According to the actress, she temporarily sat on Pamaran’s reserved seat because she wanted to take pictures of the clouds. She claimed that she politely asked Pamaran if she could sit there for a while so she could take some photos.
“Sabi ko, puwede dito muna ako tapos pag-take off mag-take lang ako ng ilang shots, lipat na ako sa upuan ko. ‘Hindi, binayaran namin ‘yong upuan na ‘yan, e,’ sabi ng guy. Sabi ko, ‘sandali lang naman, e, tapos lipat na ako agad,'” Mendez narrated.
She said that her request was answered by hostility. Pamaran allegedly threatened to hit her with a bag if she did not leave the seat that he paid for.
“E sabi niya, ‘kapag hindi ka umalis dyan hahampasin ko mukha mo ng bag ko,'” Medez said. “Lalaki siya, e, so nagulat ako gano’n ang reaksyon niya. At the top of my voice, nagalit talaga ako.”
Pamaran claimed that Mendez asked him and his companion, Andrew Wolff, an actor and athlete, to occupy the seats at the back. He did not agree because they specifically paid for those seats to have more leg room. Mendez, however, refused to vacate the seat. She insisted in sitting there so she could take pictures of clouds. He was irritated by Mendez’s childish whim. Pamaran said on an interview , “E, anong gagawin namin, tatayo lang kami sa harap?”
A woman passenger posted a collage of the incident on her Instagram account branding Mendez as a “crazy old war freak of a lady wouldn’t stop screaming and charging at Andre Wolff’s bodyguard”. She poured her frustration on IG saying that their flight was delayed for 30 minutes due to a petty fight about seat assignment. She also stated that after the punching incident, the captain announced that they were returning to manila due to an unruly passenger.
After the plane controversy, Wolff posted a series of videos on his Instagram showing Mendez being escorted off the plane by officials. Wolff received a lot of criticisms which prompted the actor-athlete to make his IG account private. He told his haters to unfollow him because he doesn’t need them or their comments. Wolff said that he posted the videos as evidence in order to correct the wrong allegations of some members of the media. He claimed that they were the aggrieved party and not the other way around.
Mendez said during an interview that she was not banned by the airline. She confirmed that she was just advised to rebook her flight.
