It’s that time of the year again—when all students need to get over the summer vacation and step back into the school year. For all the freshmen out there, it’s all the more difficult to tune back in given that you’ll be entering a whole new environment.
Beyond improvements in study habits and the new subjects you may or may not be preparing for, are the little things that will make your days in school just a little bit more fun.
The kolehiyala’s closet
For most students in the Philippines, getting to pick your own clothes only starts once you enter college. If you’ve become insufferably dependent on your uniform and are clueless about how to come up with a new outfit every day, you will be happy to discover that there is a way to make daily dress-up a total breeze.
You just need to have the right mix. Invest in simple, hardwearing, tops and bottoms that you can mix and match with each other and with almost anything else. You should have at least five of each (and by all means double that number if you can!)
Then to make things interesting, have an army of accessories at the ready. You should also have at least one pair of really amazing statement shoes in addition to your everyday pairs (one for rain, one for shine).
Make sure your closet also has a few special pieces to amp its style value. A kimono top or two can never hurt anyone.
Now if you still have to deal with wearing a uniform this school year, how do you get by? The answer is at the top of your head. Literally.
One of the quickest ways to make an outfit look more put-together is to top it off with a great hairstyle. There are so many options available for every different kind of hair, from headbands and barrettes to top buns and fishtail braids.
For lazy girls, a single ponytail and some hairpins have proven to be very versatile. If you have a thicker head of hair that no ponytail can hold, hair clamps are also a friendly, good-for-everyday option.
Another outlet to express your awesome fashion sense is through shoes. If your school is not too strict about that, try wearing a different pair every day to mix things up. Of course this is assuming that your uniform organically matches every style of shoe you have. If not, you could go with a trusty pair of sneakers, flats or perhaps even some edgy combat boots.
You should also have a good everyday bag that multitasks marvellously in that it can hold all your stuff, stay clean and sturdy, and look amazing with pretty much anything you wear (in which case check the colors of your uniform and try to complement them with your bag for an extra polished look).
If backpacks aren’t your thing, try an equally practical across-the-body sling bag or a slouchy, oversized tote bag. Handbags and purses may not be as practical, but on a short day they might be just the thing you need.
And if your uniform permits, you can play around with scarves, belts and jackets to give the boring top-and-bottom combo a little bit more funk
Whether you’re transitioning into High School or starting at a new college, becoming a freshman can become quite stressful. You need to remind yourself that freshman year should be nothing short of exciting, especially if you can celebrate it with style!
