The Achy Breaky Hearts Poster

The film “The Achy Breaky Hearts” gives a good glimpse of the pains and pressures of singlehood for a woman. Despite the advancement in science and technology and developments in various fields, there are just some things that remain backward. People may embrace modern ideologies but there are old notions that live on like stubborn stains that refuse to go…Read More »

Love Me Tomorrow

Love Me Tomorrow begins with a flashback. Christy (Dawn Zulueta) is a beautiful woman who marries an ideal man. The couple is blessed with two lovely children. They are a picture-perfect family until Christy’s husband experiences a stroke and becomes wheelchair dependent. He slowly loses zest for life but Christy remains by his side at all times.

(Movie review) ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ is persistently mediocre

I still have hope for the future.

And just like that, the three most anticipated movies of 2016 are over. Sure there’s still Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange but those didn’t get half as much anticipation or scale as BvS, Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse had. These were the big three, and how did Apocalypse stack up to the other two? While BvS received extreme contempt and…Read More »

It's not filled with beautiful shots but MOMENTS.

Forget about your worries and your strife…’coz this movie is magnificent! I can’t really think of a better way to describe this film except to say that I left the cinema feeling deeply satisfied. I kept telling my friend, “ganda nun ah”, as if she didn’t already hear it the first 3 times or so. It’s not the fist-pump, adrenaline-fueled,…Read More »

2016 will henceforth be known as the year superheroes couldn’t get along! Everybody’s fighting and it’s getting out of hand! Who do you even side with when friends are fighting friends and heroes are fighting heroes? Daredevil vs Punisher – Netflix’ Daredevil (March 18) Daredevil’s vigilantism has inspired another breed of vigilante; one that’s more ruthless and more conclusive than…Read More »

In Defense of Batman V Superman: 8 Things It Did Right

Not perfect, but still littered with awesome moments.

I’m a fan, not a critic, which is why, more often than not, I appreciate the good in movies (well, more than your typical critic, at least), and that has never been more apparent than now, as I go against a tide of animosity in defense of Batman V Superman (BvS): Dawn of Justice. While I agree with some of…Read More »

(Movie review) Hail, Ceasar! is the Anti-Movie

Would that it were so simple...this movie, I mean.

Hail, Ceasar! is likely not a movie everyone’s going to enjoy. If you’re accustomed to the story-heavy, action-packed, tonally-consistent structure of “regular” movies, then this is not for you. Hail, Ceasar! almost feels like a sketch show (SNL, Bubble Gang) with a Hollywood in the 50’s theme. The film revolves around Eddie Mannix and a day in his life as…Read More »

(Movie review) ‘Spotlight’ is Journalism 101

This is journalism – tenacious, thorough, uncompromising, brave. All too often we see bias and/or reluctance in our news, but true journalistic integrity is not being manipulated by power or profit or readership levels. True journalism is not afraid to speak the truth, not just when but especially when the truth is unpleasant. In ‘Spotlight’, we see all of that…Read More »

Chock full of technical jargon but with an approachable, strong, relevant undercurrent.

‘The Big Short’ is an A-grade film!

Chock full of technical jargon but with an approachable, strong, relevant undercurrent.

I am embarrassed to say that, being the business graduate that I am, even I couldn’t follow half of the things that were going in The Big Short. It’s such an incomprehensibly technical script; which is great for authenticity’s sake, but will no doubt be daunting to non-finance viewers! But it’s like what Ryan Gosling’s character said, “Does it make…Read More »
