Walk down the personal care aisle in supermarkets and you’re faced with a wider variety of choices – from shower gels to shampoos, bar soaps to face masks. According to Euromonitor’s report on Beauty and Personal Care in the Philippines, the number of beauty and personal care brands in the Philippines has been growing since 2014. Our awareness and familiarity with beauty brands, especially imported ones, has been strengthened by the information we get online.

While the vast number of beauty products online and in-store can thrill any beauty buff, it could delight them to know that they have their own beauty arsenal at home – their kitchen. Check out your kitchen and you might just find three natural beauty products that you can use. They’re not just good enough to eat, they’re perfect for giving you a beauty boost too!

Bananas for Beauty

Check your fruit basket for this potassium power-up. Bananas are packed with natural oils that help soften hair and skin. One way to use bananas for beauty is to create a Banana Beauty Face Mask. Bananas contain antibacterial agents that help moisturize the skin and target blemishes. Simply mash one banana with one tablespoon of honey (also another natural beauty product that might be in your kitchen!). Apply the paste to your face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse off. Your skin will feel smooth and supple. If honey is not available, you can use two bananas instead. Bananas are great for the hair too.

How about a Banana Hair Conditioner? Using the same recipe of mashed banana and a tablespoon of honey, apply the paste to your hair. Leave on for twenty minutes. See how shiny your hair will be! You will love that banana scent too! Bananas aren’t just for the hair and face! Did you know you can use them to beautify your feet too? Try this Banana Cracked Heel Lotion. Mash two ripe bananas. Clean and dry your feet, then apply the mashed bananas onto your cracked heels. You can cover up your feet with socks or wrap it in cellophane for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Bananas can nourish your skin, penetrating the dry, cracked spots for softer, smoother heels.

Look Good with Tea Bags

A set of tea bags is another great beauty partner! Tea bags contain caffeine and tannic acid, which help bring down inflammation, reducing puffiness of the skin. Tired of seeing those dark and puffy circles under your eyes? It’s time for some Tea Bags Eyebags Busters! Dig into your pantry and grab a pair of tea bags! Fill a mug with boiling water. Steep the two tea bags in the water for five minutes. Wring them out a bit, then put them in the freezer to chill. While it’s chilling, pick a relaxing place for you to lie down (a flat surface is best!). When the tea bags are cool enough, lie back, then cover each eye with a tea bag, pressing down slightly. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Check out your brighter eyes when done! Goodbye puffy eyes! Another way to use tea bags as a beauty boost is make your own facial tea steam. A Facial Tea Steam can open your pores naturally, so it tones and hydrates your skin. It’s also a relaxing experience – think getting this spa service right in your own home! Boil five cups of water, then pour into a large bowl. Add two tea bags. Bend over the bowl and place a towel over your head. Take in your facial tea steam for five to ten minutes. It makes for a detoxifying, relaxing experience!

Blooming with Brown Sugar

There are a lot of body scrubs in the market, but there’s no need to spend on pricey ones especially if you’ve got a natural exfoliant right in your kitchen! Sugar has anti-bacterial properties and glycolic acid that helps condition and moisturize skin, as well as protect it from toxins. Why brown sugar and not white? Brown sugar is said to be gentler, which makes it a better choice for those with sensitive skin. Brown sugar also has a rich smell, making the beauty experience even more indulgent! Why not create your own Brown Sugar Lips Smoothener? Dip you finger in water, then dip it in brown sugar. Gently apply it to your lips in a circular motion, exfoliating them. This is a quick and easy way to treat your dry, flaky lips especially in cold weather. Want to keep your hands looking youthful?

Try this Brown Sugar Manicure Scrub. Mix one cup of brown sugar with one third cup of olive oil. If you’ve got a Vitamin E capsule available, add it in as a bonus. Cover your hands with the scrub, gently exfoliating your skin as you go along. Leave on for five minutes, then rinse. Let your hands dry. You can use this same recipe to make your own Brown Sugar Body Scrub. Use it on your back, arms, legs, and shoulders. You’ll get that natural glow after exfoliating, plus smell luscious too!

There’s no need to hit up the beauty aisle section of supermarkets for now. You’ve got your kitchen to head to first!
