Today marks the 60th year since Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom, sparking celebrations and praise all throughout the Commonwealth.
“I dedicate myself anew to your service,” the queen told her people in a message marking the event, “I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness.”
The queen is only the second British monarch to reach this milestone; the first was Queen Victoria, who reigned for nearly 64 years until her death in 1901.
Queen Elizabeth II, who adopted the title at 26, has met nearly a quarter of all American presidents and has overseen the office of 12 British prime ministers.
"Today is a day to pay tribute to the magnificent service of Her Majesty the Queen,” PM David Cameron said, "With experience, dignity and quiet authority she has guided and united our nation and the Commonwealth over six varied decades."
Former Prime Minister John Major reflected on the the wisdom from many meetings he had with the queen during his term, saying that, “anyone who doesn't listen to [the queen's] view and consult her when necessary is missing a huge opportunity.”
Sir John also formally launched the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, which will fight curable diseases and promote education and culture.
Australia congratulated the Queen as well, with Prime Minister Julia Gillard calling the anniversary “a truly remarkable event.” Thousands of Australians cheered for the Queen during her visit to the country last year.
At age 85, the queen will celebrate the milestone locally, intending to travel widely across England with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
Other membes of the royal family however, will travel throughout the Commonwealth.
Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge will visit Malaysia, Singapore, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.
Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall will visit Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Prince Harry will tour Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
