Manny Pacquiao achieved another milestone in boxing, receiving his seventh world title after demolishing Puerto Rican champion Miguel Angel Cotto at the 12th round of the World Boxing Organization Welterweight Championship in Las Vegas early this afternoon.
Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the bout at the two minute mark of the last round after the dethroned champion looked frozen as Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) threw a barrage of blows on Cotto's (34-2, 27 KOs) bludgeoned head.
The match started with both fighters throwing jabs at each other, as Cotto aimed for Pacquiao's body while the latter aiming for the former's head.
The bout went lopsided though as Pacquiao knocked down Cotto in round four with a left upper cut.
In round five, Pacquiao handed Cotto a beating, opening a cut at the Puerto Rican's right cheek.
In the latter rounds, Cotto's eyes swelled while various gashes opened up, resulting to a bloody face.
Although various sports expert predicted an early knockout for Pacquiao, the Filipino champ displayed impeccable boxing skills, converting the match into a boxing clinic.
In another development, Filipino boxing star Z Gorres is currently confined in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas after suffering a reported hemorrhage after winning over Colombian Luis Melendez via unanimous decision in a Pacquiao-Cotto undercard.
In an abs-cbnnews.com report, Gorres collapsed minutes after the fight. After undergoing tests, UMC suggested an immediate brain surgery on Gorres.
According to Quinito Henson in a DZBB interview, “this must be Gorres' final bout and must retire from boxing after recovering from the injury.”
