Senate to investigate Balikatan

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has urged the Senate to investigate the allegations of Balikatan fund misuse brought to light by Lt. Nancy Gadian. According to Inquirer.net, this was in reference to the Navy-released statement that Gadian risks losing separation benefits if she does not turn herself in to military custody.

Senate National Defense Committee head Rodolfo Biazon said he will launch a probe as soon as the committee has assessed the information both from Gadian and the Philippine Navy. Senator Loren Legarda, on the other hand, said that the government should protect whistle-blowers to prove their commitment to fight graft and corruption.

In a statement, Legarda said, “We should understand that there is greater public interest in cleaning a government agency of corruption than in going after specific individuals for ‘whistle-blowing.’ This is what we should remember in the case of Navy Lt. Nancy Gadian, who could be performing a public service.”
