After the assassination attempt yesterday against the governor of Sulu, another politically-motivated attack has happened in Mindanao. Officials believe that Maguindanao governor Datu Andal Ampatuan Jr. was the main target of the bombing that killed a member of the pro-government militia and injured three others. Ampatuan was on his way to visit Shariff Aguak town when the attack occurred.
Mindanao Examiner reported that Lt. Col. Jonathan Ponce, Army 6th Division spokesman, said three homemade bombs assembled from 81mm mortar shells and connected cell phones exploded seconds before the convoy passed. Ponce blamed rebels for the incident.
The MILF, however, denied any involvement with the bombings. Senior MILF leader Eid Kabalu remarked, “The Ampatuans have many enemies. The attacks could be related to a feud or even politics. We have nothing to do with the bombings.”
