15 charged with murder after alleged hazing death

Fifteen law students were charged with murder yesterday, following the death of freshman law student Marvin Reglos allegedly during fraternity hazing last Sunday in Antipolo, Rizal.

Facing charges are students Erick Castillo, Bodjie Yap, Arjay Gregana, Jufali Abdula and 11 others, the Philippine Star report.

Castillo and Yap, who were identified by the Inquirer as fourth year law students from San Sebastian College, were detained by the police Sunday afternoon. The two suspects were arrested after they inquired about the condition of Reglos, who was rushed to Unciano Medical Center minutes earlier.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a group of unidentified men rushed Reglos to the hospital around 3pm on Sunday. The victim, however, was declared dead on arrival because of the injuries he sustained from the alleged initiation rights.

ABS-CBN News and the Inquirer reported that the group immediately left the hospital in a red Honda City with the plate number WMF-174 after the pronouncement of Reglos' death. The Philippine Star, on the other hand, said that the vehicle bearing the said plate number was white.

Reglos' remains, which were transferred to Antipolo Memorial Homes, were identified by his relatives Tuesday morning. His father and mother are yet to arrive from Isabela and Korea, respectively.

In an ABS-CBN News report, Reglos' sister Lorvie recounted how Reglos told her last February 18 that he would join a fraternity.

“Sinabi na po niya sa akin na may fraternity siyang sasalihan. Sabi ko ‘ikaw magisip ka ng mabuti, malaki ka na. Alam mo na ang ginagawa mo,’” Lorvie added.

Lambda Rho Beta fraternity

Citing the shirt which Reglos was wearing when he was brought to the hospital, which bore the name of the Lambda Rho Beta fraternity, authorities said that Reglos was probably undergoing the initiation rights of the brotherhood when he died. The fraternity is mostly composed of lawyers and law students.

The fraternity angle was further established when the police found suspicious messages in the cellphones of Yap and Castillo. The Inquirer quoted the messages written in Filipino saying: “News blackout, don’t forget. Erase all messages on your phone regarding the initiation. Don’t answer if asked to name your officers.”

Another said: “Nobody talks. That’s the order. Erase all messages ASAP. Even this one. You must all obey.”

The text messages were sent by a certain RG Gregna.

Anti-hazing law

Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, who admitted being a member of a sister-sorority of the Lambda Rho Beta, ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a parallel probe into the incident.

“It’s our duty to find out the truth and who were involved. It’s our duty to find out. It’s our duty also to investigate and bring them to the bar of justice. We have an anti-hazing act. It’s a criminal act,” De Lima was quoted saying by the Inquirer.

De Lima likewise said that the anti-hazing law should be amended so that the fraternity heads will be held responsible for such incidents.

Reglos' death was reported as the Supreme Court decided to affirm the conviction of five members of the Aquila Legis Fraternity who were held liable for the death of Ateneo Law student Lenny Villa in a 1991 hazing incident.

The high tribunal also urged Congress to push for the amendment of the Anti-Hazing law.
