Palaspas: An Appreciation of Palm Leaf Art in the Philippines garnered the Gintong Aklat Award for Arts and Culture yesterday, during ceremonies held at the Manila International Book Fair. The Life and Art of Francisco Coching was honored as a Finalist in the same category.
Palaspas is published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, while the latter is published by the Vibal Foundation.
Other books honored at the event, held in the SMX Convention Center, were Kulinarya: A Guide Book to Philippine Cuisine, published by Anvil Publishing; Everyday Warriors: The Faces and Stories of Breast Cancer, published by UST Publishing House; and Compendium of the Economically Important Seashells in Panay, Philippines, published by the University of the Philippines Press; among others.
The Gintong Aklat Awards aim to recognize excellence in Philippine bookmaking, and are given by the Book Development Association of the Philippines to outstanding book publishers based on the quality of books they produce.
Three professional panels judge the nominees, which are divided into seven categories: English Literature, Filipino Literature, Social Science, Inspirational, Culinary, Natural Science, Arts and Culture.
