E-mailA Filipino independent film bested other international entries in the 33rd Cairo Film Festival held from November 10 to 20.
According to an Inquirer.net report, “Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe (The Rapture of Fe), by filmmaker and Ateneo Literature professor, Alvin Yapan won the Digital Competition section of one of the most prestigious movie festivals in the world.
Top-billed by “indie queen,” Irma Adlawan, “Fe” was hailed by Cinemalaya critics as “a sensitive portrayal of a woman caught between an abusive husband (Nonie Buencamino), and an impotent lover (TJ Trinidad).”
The indie also won as a special jury prize in this year's Cinemalaya Festival.
Director Yapan and producer Alemberg Ang went to Cairo to receive the Golden Award and a cash prize of $10,000 (P 467,599.98).
The last Filipino film to receive recognition from the Cairo festival was the OFW tearjerker, “The Flor Contemplacion Story” directed by Joel Lamangan which won Best Picture in 1995. The movie also won Best Actress for Nora Aunor for the title role.
“Fe” also previously screened at the Chicago International Film Festival and the New Delhi Film Festival. In December, the film will compete at the Bahamas International Film Festival.
With this win, “Fe” joins the ranks of other indie movies which have received international acclaim, namely: “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros” for the Sundance Film Festival; “Kubrador,” 2005 Moscow Film Festival Best Picture and “Lagusan”, Best Drama Feature Film at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in 2004.
