22-year-old Daniel Radcliffe is getting himself in all the entertainment headlines with the impending release of his first movie after Harry Potter.
“It was very refreshing just to see my own name next to a different character's name,” Radcliffe said in an interview, talking about his character Arthur in The Woman in Black, a new Gothic horror-suspense movie based on a 1983 novel by Susan Hill. In a departure from the adolescent Harry Potter, Radcliffe's character is a lawyer and a father.
“If I can make a career for myself after Potter, and it goes well, and is varied and with longevity, then that puts to bed the ‘child actors argument,” he said.
The actor has shone a spotlight onto his life in the past few weeks, including the drinking problem which started around the filming of the sixth Harry Potter movie. Radcliffe revealed that he 'blacked out' nearly every time he drank alcohol. He quit cold turkey last year.
Radcliffe also appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he made a USD5000 bet with the host on the outcome of the upcoming Super Bowl.
“I am a Giants fan,” he told DeGeneres, adding that he was “christened a Giants fan” when he arrived in New York for the 2007 production of Equus.
Ellen is a Saints fan, as she grew up in New Orleans. Whoever loses the bet will donate the sum to The Trevor Project, a program that fights to stop LBGTQ youth suicide
Radcliffe will play a young Allen Ginsberg in his next film, Kill Your Darlings, a movie about the start of the beat generation. His role as the sometimes-nude poet is already raising some eyebrows, with Radcliffe affirming his status as a proud “Jewish man” with “hair down there”.
The Woman in Black premieres in Philippine cinemas on 8th February.
