Brillante Mendoza wins best director at Cannes

Despite an entry that divided critics, and was described as Cannes's "worst" film by critic Robert Ebert, Brillante Mendoza yesterday received the best director prize for Kinatay (May 24 at about 9:30, Paris Time).

Kinatay is Mendoza's 2009 entry at the Cannes Film Festival, which he has participated in twice before. It is his 3rd year participating in the prestigious film festival. His last year's entry, Serbis, also received polarized opinions from critics.

The historic win, a first for a Filipino filmmaker, was presented by Monty Python animator, filmmaker and writer Terry Gilliam. The Palme d'Or, Cannes's highest honor, was given to The White Ribbon by Austria's Michael Haneke.
