The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) announced on Monday that household generation charges in December will have a P0.0257 drop per kilowatt-hour (kWh), mainly due to the higher dispatch and lower fuel cost of independent power producers (IPP) in November.
Ivanna de la Peña, Meralco vice-president and utility economics head, noted that the generation charge has generally been on the decline over the past months despite continuous upward shoot in the prices of basic commodities and goods.
De la Peña said that power supplied by IPPs that registered P0.48/kWh offset the average increase of P0.44/kWh by National Power Corporation (Napocor) and Wholesale Electric Spot Market (WESM).
"With the 2.6-centavo reduction in the generation charge and adjustments in the other rate components, our customers will in fact see a net reduction in their bills this December," de la Peña said.
Meralco said that households using 100kWh in a month will have a decrease in their bills by up to P3.84, with P7.82 and P11.74 for 200kWh and 300kWH consumers, respectively.
Meralco also assured its customers that the company continues to look for supply mix that would provide the most reasonable rates.
“Furthermore, the company does not earn from the generation charge, since it is merely a pass through charge which may go up or down depending on the cost of energy that Meralco purchases from its power suppliers,” Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco external communications manager, added.
