A 50-year-old woman who flew in from Chicago is the second person found to have H1N1 in the Philippines. Inquirer.net reports that she arrived last Wednesday but only began showing symptoms a day later. Authorities are in the process of contacting at least 10 other people from her flight whom she might have been in close contact with.
Since being held in quarantine at the Manila's Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM), the woman, who remains unnamed, has already shown signs of improvement. “When we examined the specimens, the viral load was already very low although it’s still positive so it’s possible that in a few days it will already become negative,” said Dr. Remigio Olmeda, RITM director.
So far there has been no community-level outbreak, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque. For this reason the government will not be suspending the opening of classes on June 1.
