Much has been said, written, posted, and even tweeted about the 12-hour hostage-taking incident which took place in front of the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park last August 23 and ended with the death of 8 tourists and the hostage-taker himself.
The carnage put the Philippines once again on the spotlight but for the wrong reasons. In a country described by foreign press as one already accustomed to kidnappings and violence blamed on Muslim rebels, it raised questions about the ability of our police force to deal with hostage-takings, and sparked criticism and debate regarding the media coverage and how the situation should have been covered.
According to The Associated Press, “…It provoked demands from the Hong Kong government for an explanation, and an acknowledgment from Philippine President Benigno Aquino III that his police need more training and equipment.”
